For according to the law and by the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither to accuse no man, nor to speak of that whereof I am accused and condemned to die, but I pray God save the King and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never, and to me he was ever a good, a gentle, and sovereign lord.
And if any person will meddle of my cause, I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me.
Nobody had thought to provide a coffin for her burial, so a yeoman warder had to fetch an old elm chest, which had once contained bow staves, from the Tower armoury. In , restoration work was carried out on the chapel. The chancel floor was found to be sinking, and so the remains buried there were carefully exhumed. But there was little she could do. Boleyn was accused of sexual affairs with male members of her court, who in some cases were tortured into making confessions.
In addition, she was accused of incest with her own brother and of using sorcery to bewitch the king. Boleyn was sent to confinement in the Tower of London and her trial took place on May 15, But if you see something that doesn't look right, click here to contact us!

Following the physical descriptions and depictions of Anne, I could imagine she would look like a typical catwalk girl of today then a maid of 16th century. Reading so many of these comments makes me laugh because it makes me believe that people are basing their judgements of Henry and Anne on the show TUDORS. Henry was a narcissistic, self-indulgent, megalomaniac, which of course, also, made him an insufferable, arrogant bully have I used enough adjectives to describe him?
He was all powerful and showed it! He was KING! As you can tell I am not a big fan! So in the 16th century it was ok to frame your wife with a kangaroo court..
Hi Alan, I just wanted to say that I think your comment regarding what Paul said is a little rude and critical. After reading several books on Anne Boleyn, they do dipict her as being ruthless, selfish and potentially even murdering a bishop with poison. Yes she did not deserve the atrocities of a death sentence, but remember we are talking about a corrupted judicial system that existed years ago.
She did a job on Henrys wife, Katharine of Aragon, her sister, Mary, and the king to get what she wanted. She played it.. But still, what a barbaric way to die. Who wrote this article please? Henry had his sycophants declare the marriage null and void, this was done whilst Anne was in prison awaiting her fate.
If this was the case she could not be guilty of adultery or incest, because she was not married to Henry. Of course nobody dare tell Henry that…food for thought. I admit I did not read all comments prior to this, but I noticed quite a few discussing the brutality of beheading. In fact, it was considered the quickest and most pain-free form of execution. For comparison: breaking on the wheel could take days; drawing and quartering maximum punishment at the time a horrible half-hour; sword through the gut, several seconds to minutes; beheading, milliseconds.

Nolan suspects there was more to the story than adultery, a contentious issue about which historians have disagreed for decades. Two months before her execution, Boleyn was involved in passing nationwide legislation titled the Poor Law, which stated that local officials should find work for the unemployed.
The law entailed creating a new governing council that rivaled the one headed up by Cromwell. Parliament Week this November. The traditional historical interpretation of Anne Boleyn has relied on sources that obscured that part of her story. For example, Nolan says, the Spanish Ambassador Eustace Chapuys is a source of much contemporary writing about her, but he was a supporter of Katherine of Aragon.
And even beyond the ambassador, the people who kept the records in the s and the people who interpreted them in the centuries that followed tended to be overwhelmingly male.
