Why is nissan altima losing power

But I no longer tell mechanics what I think it might be, I just tell them the symptoms and let them figure it out. Transmission may be slipping. Do you hear the engine speed way up but have very little acceleration? Has the trans ever had a fluid change? How does the fluid level and color look? Thanks to last two posters for the info. The idle is normal, and then press the gas and nothing for a second, then it goes.

Super scary when it happens when making a left from a turning lane. Sounds like a trip to the mechanic is the answer. Cleaning the throttle body with the appropriate solvent takes care of that.

A bad fuel filter will not let enough fuel into the Altimas fuel injection system to support operation above a certain demand on the engine. The timing chain or belt is responsible for keeping the upper valve train synced with the crankshaft.

This is vital for spark timing. If the timing is off a little and the engine still runs, the timing belt may have skipped.

If it has jumped too much the Altima may not even fire. The amount that is created is carefully thought out during the engine design process. When there is too much vacuum, it creates a situation where air is not coming in and being read by the MAF sensor, which causes the vehicle to run wrong and not accelerate. The MAF sensor also may not be functioning correctly. As you can see, there are a lot of reasons that your Nissan Altima may not accelerate. Good luck diagnosing yours. If there is anything that you can add, please feel free to leave a comment.

It wasn't cheap but well worth it. Originally the part was back ordered but my mechanic got it quick. So a car needs an after market device to make it run correctly. This is something Nissan should pay for not me. Couldn't agree more. Nissan is aware of the problem but I couldn't get them to pay for mine. They gave me all kinds of lines such as your warranty is up, you have never had service done here etc.

I even reported it to the BBB. They need to do a recall but I don't ever see that happening. Liza answered 4 years ago. I am having the same problem with my Rogue. It's scary when you are driving on the freeway and lose power. I just read this thread and will be calling Nissan tomorrow. Go to change. Everyone please follow the link and sign the petition.

The problem is if they say you need this extra part Cooler or whatever then that is pretty much admitting guilt their car was made correctly. I promise you I will never ever even consider buying another Nissan and would sell the except I don't want some other person having this issue. I would be as bad as Nissan but exactly what they are doing. I meant to The problem is if they say you need this extra part Cooler or whatever then that is pretty much admitting guilt their car was "NOT" made correctly from the begining.

Graysand answered 4 years ago. Please add me to class action lawsuit! I've got a Nissan Altima. Almost died yesterday on the freeway when my car lost power going uphill, got off freeway and it barely went with semi trucks coming right at me! From transmission heating up! Got diagnostic and it said transmission sensor.

Slept in town overnight, started right up this morning like nothing was wrong. Called Nissan and they told me I need a transmission intercooler installed. Kgowans96 gmail. This will cause the car to enter into limp mode meaning that the car has poor acceleration after rpm and will not go above 60 mph. This is to ensure you do not completely ruin your transmission. When the fluid entering the transmission is not adequately cooled, the band in the CVT heats up and "stretches", allowing for playing on the gears in the CVT.

If left unattended for too long this will cause the band to break. Hence the fail-safe. This can be noticed by an audible whine coming from the left side of the vehicle.

At this point a transmission replacement is already needed. Adding a transmission cooler will only band-aid the issue. For those that cannot afford to have a transmission cooler installed by a shop or are unable to install it themselves, there is a youtube video for a altima sedan that gives a rough idea of how to install the cooler. This will pull some of the heat from the engine bay allowing your transmission to run slightly cooler and don't exceed speeds of mph and don't push the car to hard when driving up hill.

The loud whine heard from the driver side of the vehicle is the CVT. Tyrelle answered 3 years ago. FlNissanowner answered 3 years ago. Please add me to petition on this claim. I am often driving in Florida from Tampa to Miami, when overheating begins and rpm's suddenly up and down for a while. Service engine light comes on, dealer resets the light.

Soon after the light came back on. This stuff continues for 6 months now. Ju answered 3 years ago. Madhushanka answered 3 years ago. Most of CVT boxes doing this according to my research. I also have a Nissan with a CVT transmission but it's not doing this. However, most of people was able to solve this problem by replacing the secondary speed sensor in the transmission.

Ploberjott answered 3 years ago. The speed would drop from approx 70 mph to 55 on the interstate. This caused several near wrecks on the interstate. I changed the battery, plugs, wires, af sensor, filter, oil, coolant, alternator, etc. Recently, after driving for about 45 minutes, the car started reving up the RPMs while on the interstate to the red line. This would last about 5 min, then lose power. Then it would drop below 50 and continually lose speed till I stop. It would whine on the interstate.

I could pull over for minutes and restart to get power to finish my commute. The pedal to the floor but no acceleration. Over the past week, the air conditioner has just went out.

I was a huge Nissan supporter, with my last 3 new cars being Nissans. However, I will never purchase a Nissan ever again and I will discourage anyone from purchasing one in the future. I have a hard time believing the dealership that they haven't heard of the problem.

We had a transmission fan put on and the problem has been solved. Knock on wood. Good Luck. JRam1rez answered 3 years ago. I am in the same position for over a month now. About 1 year ago, I lost power to the whole vehicle and was stranded in the middle of the street.

Now, I am losing power when I accelerate over 60 mph when I have been driving the car for about minutes. Thank You. Nicholas answered 3 years ago. Hi interesting thread. Not sure if it's still active but if you can add me as well. After driving for about 30 minutes my RPM's get capped at around and I have to pull over for 30 minutes to let it cool and start operating normal again. Nicholas DesertComputerAgents. William answered 3 years ago. Now car is fully functional even on a hot day. Stanley answered 3 years ago.

I have a Nissan Altima that if I drive for more than 30 minutes during the hot months will not accelerate due to the CVT Transmission problem.

You need a fan installed on your transmission. Mine has been better since I had that done. Why should we have to have a fan installed for a defective Transmission that Nissan built that overheats. That is like buying a car and your AC stops working and they tell you, you need to buy an aftermarket compressor to cool your original compressor.

I am going to sell this POS to a used car place. But I can promise you I will never consider a Nissan again. JPierce1 answered 3 years ago. I sold the car ages ago ladies and gents. It was too dangerous to drive to be honest. And I refuse to endanger my life over a faulty transmission. Probably won't buy another Nissan, but it is a serious issue. Also, with the high mileage of my vehicle, Nissan replied that they could not help.

A new transmission costs 5 Grand. Personally, that does not fit with my budget. But it was a decent ride while it lasted, however, every person I see driving a Nissan ; I tell them to check their transmission and other faulty parts that come with the vehicle.

Best suggestion I can give the people who purchased this vehicle Go weekly to different dealerships. Save your receipts and stay safe people. Reuben P answered 3 years ago. Nissan is just garbage, that's why they're so cheap and you see people rollin around in one. I had to get rid of mine 1 year ago and upgraded to a Challenger. Best decision Ive ever made. Don't buy anything with a CVT transmission.

Thank God I was able to pull over to the slow lane after just about being rear ended. Drove 15 miles home with hazard lights on and Thanking God we didn't get hit. After two years of dealing with problems with deceleration with the Tranny all I did was replace the fluid and it works like new again.

Have the same problem with my Altima. Brought it to dealer who was not very forthcoming about the warranty extension. Then told me the extension started in but did not include The number told me that the extension did not apply to all Altima's because it depended on who manufactured the transmission. I was aghast, seems like they were searching for a reason to avoid discussing the warranty extension. How do I join the lawsuit? GuruVBS5Y answered 3 years ago.

This is very dangerous uphill once you are uphill experiencing this and it is quite terrifying. Happened a couple of times had my whole family on board. May be they are still waiting for a casualty or someone to be statistics before they start a recall or do something when the press and tv become interested.

Skyway answered 3 years ago. Add me please to the class action suit. Starts jerking then doesn't move. I have a Altima has the same problem. Loses power. Thru reading this thread and calling Nissan service dept locally they recommended installing a transmission cooler unit on. Problem fixed! But with that being said I will never buy another Nissan product again.

Trading mine in this month. There actually having the same problem with brand new Jules! We have been close to an accident 3 times in this Nissan Altima. It's really awful that Nissan has not done anything about this situation. Especially knowing that this huge problem exists and what the consequences could be. I guess they are willing to take a chance and spare a human life just to make a dollar! I hope that no one looses their life in a faulty car that Nissan refuses to recall and fix.

Even if you invest the money to fix the CVT it does not resolve the issues completely and it also voids any warranty! I contacted the legal team that is going after Nissan regarding these horrible CVT's.

They sent me a form and listed me as part of the lawsuit, but warned that this litigation will take YEARS and not to expect anything special. That made sense to me. But you guys who are interested in pursuing Nissan, call this office and ask for a form so you can be included. GuruX4WK4 answered 3 years ago. This is happening to my Altima!!!! I lose power going uphill! If the CVT is not failing, then the transmission fluid is getting too hot and the CVT is going into a safe mode where it protects itself and the car loses acceleration and steady power.

GuruXR6BL answered 2 years ago. I had the same problem with my Nissan Altima. When traveling uphill on the interstate uphill for a prolonged time, the car would rapidly decelerate from 75 mph to 45 mph.

I took it in to the service department and they recommended putting in a new cooler and update the software on the control module on the CVT to prevent the transmission from overheating.

Liz20holley answered 2 years ago. It only does it at high speeds if I put it in "slop stick" I can manually override it.

I put the color on the cvt it did NOT help. It only does it on the interstate, but not all the time. Jacqueline answered 2 years ago. It's the crappy Transmission Darshan answered 2 years ago. Same issue with Nissan altima of not going above 65K after 2 hr drive.

I decided to go with cheapest fix first, in my opinion, and got a transmission flush. Haven't had the problem in years. Even went to San Diego from LA without no signs of power loss. I think making sure your transmission fluid levels are correct is key.
