Hank returned to Berkeley this season after experimenting with a move to Minnesota to live closer to his daughter and ex wife. Hank's been teaching Max his trade secrets after school at his studio and connecting with him in a completely new way.

He actually likes Max and likes being around him. I'm not sure how many people admire Hank or how many people he has in his life who say, 'Hey, I want to be like you. I want to be a photographer like you. He's hilarious on and off screen and he often adds a little something to a scene. You know how Hank calls Max "Mad Max? Romano's favorite scene, so far, is one that wasn't in the original script of this season's "Election Day.

The script called for Sarah to convince Ruby to go along with it since she lives in another state, but Romano called Katims and told him he thought it was a cop-out for the adults to placate Max. He becomes friends with Sarah again, who has become a serious photographer. After she beats him out for a photography job, she offers him a position as her assistant, which he eventually takes.

They remain friends throughout the season. Max also starts hanging out with Hank as he learns how to take pictures. Hank and Max grow to become close friends, which causes Hank to question his personality. Hank figures out he has Asperger's Syndrome after reading a book to help him relate to Max's disorder. He develops feelings for Sarah again, and the two get back together in the season finale. Hank helps out with Ruby when his ex-wife moves her and Ruby back to Berkley.

Hank comes to terms with his Asperger's and works on improving his flaws for the sake of Sarah. He struggles with raising a now teenage Ruby, who rebels against him and Sandy.
