Tennis Warehouse University offers an excellent string comparison tool where you can compare different factors of a string. If we put a couple of different gauges of strings there to compare stiffness, we find the following:. As you can see most factors are similar, but the stiffness is significantly lower for the thinner gauge, while the spin potential is greater.
The tension loss is almost always higher for the stiffer string, so that is really not an important factor here, but it is quite clear what happens when you go for the thinner gauge of Babolat RPM Blast.
HEAD Hawk is another example of a stiffer poly. As you can see the stiffness is lower for the thinner gauge, but the spin potential is not.
The thicker gauge of the Hawk string offers better friction, which means that the strings move and snap back into play. This is what produces extra spin. When it comes to nylon or multifilament strings, the differences in stiffness are generally smaller. A few key takeaways here are that there is almost no difference in stiffness, power, and spin potential between the gauges.
The spin potential of a nylon string vs polyester is also quite far apart, but there are even stronger examples that I will use a post about spin. Before I leave the string comparisons, I wanted to add this one. Spin Potential Beyond durability, players also rely on their string gauge to influence their potential for generating spin.
Types of String The type of string your using frequently has an impact on the gauge that you choose. Frequency of Play Another factor to consider is your frequency of play. Comfort When it comes to gauge and stringbed stiffness, which impacts comfort, studies have been inconclusive. Player Mains Crosses R. String Gauge and Tension A common question that comes up when talking about string gauge is what tension works best for a specific gauge string or how tension should be modified when moving up or down a gauge for the same string.

Hey Rob, Thank you for your question. You might find it helpful to check out the following two articles that cover natural gut tennis strings: Natural Gut Strings: An In-depth Look at The Oldest String In Tennis The Best Tennis Strings on The Market As far as tension goes, natural gut strings will stay fresh or lively for most any racquet when strung roughly within the tension recommended by the racquet manufacturer.
Hopefully, this helps! All the best, Jon Reply. Very nice article Reply. HiAnkesh, Thanks for taking the time to share the positive feedback! With 19 gauge strings does the tension affect the spin potential? Hi Bill, Great question. How do I know on what tension should I play with? Hi Andres, To get the full rundown, check out my guide on string tension.
Let me know if you have any follow-up questions. Thanks very much Reply. Hi Lincoln, Thanks for the positive vibes. Glad you enjoyed the resource.
Hi, If you could kindly help me over this. I am 33, kindly recommend me the best. I am also suffering from an elbow. Thanks a lot for your presence for us. Hi Arjav, Thanks for sharing. As far as durability goes: One option is to bump up the gauge of your multifilament NXT power.
You should find all of these last longer than NXT power at 16 gauge. You can also string your polyester as the mains, which should help with the durability. However, the mains will primarily dictate the overall feel, which you may find results in a bit less comfort. Good luck — would love to hear how things work out. Would it be ok to use RPM Blast in a junior racket size 26? Hi Stef, Great question.

Luxilon ALU Power. Pros will tend to use slightly thinner strings than others because durability is irrelevant to them, whereas a beginner might want something more durable. The diameter of a tennis string will typically be between 0. In practice it is very rare to see anyone using a string with a diameter outside of the range 1. Although these differences may not seem like much, a 1. Each gauge describes a string of a diameter within a range of, typically, 0. The most popular string gauges are listed below, alongside the range of diameters that each covers.
As an example, 16 gauge string has a diameter in the range 1. As a result, 16 gauge string will be more durable, whereas 17 gauge will offer more feel.
Players need to try out different gauges to establish whether the benefits of a thinner string outweigh the costs in terms of frequent restrings. Go to a softer poly or a multifilament. Switching gauge only really makes sense for comfort when you only need a slight adjustment. For example, you are playing pain-free but start to feel it in the arm after a long-hitting session. Maybe then a thinner gauge will make a difference.
A thin gauge polyester has the most spin potential out of any string. The downside is that it will break quickly for some players. The thicker the string, the longer it holds tension. This is because they do not stretch as much as thinner strings and consequently holds tension better.
As a result, a thicker gauge string may feel at a higher tension relatively, even if it was strung at the same tension as a thinner string. The best gauge polyester string is one that doesn't hurt your arm and doesn't break after a few games.
Depending on your game that could be one of several but I would start with a 16 gauge and see how you get on. Hopefully, this post has given you a good idea of how gauge effects playability. Generally speaking, they are only very subtle differences, and my recommendation would be to use the thinnest string you can that still offers you the playtime durability you are after. What gauge tennis strings are you using, and why? Can you notice the difference when changing gauge? Let me know in the comments.
Of course it was nothing for Federer. I have seen Serena with daughter must have been a special exempt , but imagine Federer to sit 14 days without possibility of leaving a room with Mirka and 4 children.
I guess, Craig told him, how it can look like and his decision was peRFect. The only privilege he could get would be to belong to 50 persons group accommodated in Adelaide, not in Melbourne, with the luck, no positive case on the plain. They are all cleared now to go for 5 hours a day for training and practicing. Still not enough for family with 4 children. Only 1 player tested positive Pospisil but about 70 are strictly quarantined for 14 days. Cuevas showed good spirit and is inventing special routines to train in the hotel room.
To be just one must take into account, some Australian citizens are stranded in different corners of the world since almost a year because of strict rules of passing Australian border. Sandgren was positive but again this shows the huge flaw with PCR — it does not show if you are infectious. Sandgren had covid in November, I dunno if he had symptoms.
